Eugenia Greinert - painter

She was born into an artistic family; her mother and brother were painters. In 1936, she graduated from the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. She gained recognition as a portraitist (she painted, among others, a portrait of President Mościcki) and as a painter of miniatures on ivory plates. She spent the war in Poland. Her husband was killed during one of the RAF air raids, and Eugenia Greinert was deported to a labour camp in Germany after the Warsaw Uprising. After the end of the war, she stayed briefly in Paris and emigrated to Canada in 1947.

She worked as a domestic worker in a parish in Elma/Manitoba. In her spare time, she painted religious pictures for the parish and church. After her contract ended, she went to Winnipeg, where she was commissioned to paint portraits of members of the Manitoba Parliament. She also painted a portrait of Minister of Education W.C. Miller. The local Kitchener Record magazine titled an article about the painter: "Famous Artist in Poland, Woman Scrubs in Canada", to show the declension that emigration had wrought in the life of the Polish painter.

Greinert painted a portrait of Queen Elizabeth in coronation dress from a photograph. This painting was exhibited in the Air Force Officers' Lounge/Ontario unit, during the Queen's visit. Another commission came from Calgary, after which Greinert moved to Edmonton before settling in Vancouver in 1956. The artist painted primarily portraits of famous people, but also flowers, still life, landscapes and urban architecture.

A portrait of Frank Dojack, a Ukrainian publisher, by Greinert, is in the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. The painter represented the school of Polish Realism enriched by the achievements of the Post-Impressionists. She used a rich colour palette and delicately handled light. In 2010, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Vancouver hosted an exhibition of the artist's works held by those planning to create a private museum of Eugenia Greinert.

The work in the catalogue
Eugenia Greinert, portrait of a boy, 1954, pastel, Culture Avenue blog. The work depicts a seated half-posture of a several-year-old boy. A painting notebook lies on his lap. In one hand he holds paints, in the other a long brush. The boy is sitting sideways, slightly turned to the right, his face set en face and looking ahead. Large black eyes and carmine lips give the face an idealising quality. The boy is dressed in a white shirt and blue trousers. His brown hair is lit up with light highlights. The composition of the canvas has been simplified by dispensing with ornamentation. The dark blue and brown background is contrasted with the white of the shirt, the strong light flattens the features. The work derives from the Post-Impressionist tradition - sketchiness, colourism and subjectivity in the approach to the subject played a key role.
