According to the B.C. Burial Register: Chopin Frédéric Françoise, 39 years old, domiciled in the 2nd arrondissement, buried on 29 October 1849, death certificate number in the mortuary 5853, general number 99165.

Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883), sculptor and painter, husband of Solange Dudevant, daughter of George Sand, created a marble tomb sculpture of Frédéric Chopin in 1850. The work depicts an allegorical figure of Music, seated, draped in the antique style, holding a harp, with her head crowned with a wreath of verbena and expressing deep sorrow. The sculpture is signed 'Clésinger, 1850'. On the front of the base is an oval marble medallion with an image of Chopin, signed 'Clésinger, 1850'. According to Henry Jouin (1898), the height of the figure is 107 cm and the dimensions of the medallion are 45 x 32 cm.

The tombstone was criticised by C.K. Norwid, who wrote: "You can reach the highest lyricism, but you have to walk in sandals or barefoot and with a stick, or else the dryads will burn you and erect a shamefully carved monument to you, pretending to be a woman crying with a lyre in her hand! That's the kind of statue that was erected for Frederick, that woman who cries there...".

The tomb was restored in 1889, through the efforts of the piano-building firm Erard; in 1932 [actually 1934], the 'Chopin Music Lovers Society ' [Fryderyk Chopin Institute ], when its president was August Zaleski covered the cost of restoring the monument (BPP dep. TOZ syg. 33); in 1995. the restoration of the tombstone was carried out by Andrzej Koss and Janusz Smaza , commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and Art in Warsaw through the Centre for the Protection and Conservation of Public Collections; Andrzej Koss, Janusz Smaza, Abbreviated conservation documentation of the tombstone of Fryderyk Chopin at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France, The work was carried out by visual artists-conservators of works of art prof.
