Paris
Unveiling of the Wittig sculpture

On 11 June, a ceremony was held in the Trocadéro gardens to unveil the statue of 'Eve' by Wittig, purchased by the French government and donated by it to the city of Paris.

Present at the unveiling were Minister Zaleski and his wife, MP Knoll who had arrived from Rome, Ambassador Chłapowski and his wife, Consul General Poznański, members of the city council, the Secretary of the Academy of Fine Arts Widor, member of the Institute Emil Bourgeois and a number of eminent personalities from the political and diplomatic world, and the author of the statue.

Member of the city council de Andigné spoke first, indicating that it gives him great pleasure to pay tribute to the talent of Wittig, one of the best sculptors in Europe.

This was followed by the vice-president of the city council, Mr Lefebvre, who thanked Minister Zaleski for finding time among his many activities to honour this demonstration with his presence, thus showing his sympathy for Paris.

The third speaker was Bouju, the Prefect, who emphasised the kinship of aesthetic tendencies between Poland and France, expressing his joy that today's festivities were taking place in the presence of the great statesman who so excellently directs the politics of his noble country and in whose person Paris welcomes its dear guest.

The fourth speaker was the delegate of the Academy of Fine Arts, Buland, who, on its behalf, expressed to his colleague Wittig his general admiration for the beauty of his work, which has since become one of the most splendid beautifications of the gardens of Paris.

Minister Zaleski was the last to speak, remarking that the honour done to Edward Wittig, whose work contributes to the beautification of Paris, falls on the whole of Poland. For there are no nations more attached to each other than the Polish and French peoples. The Minister indicated that he was touched by the words said by the previous speakers about Polish-French friendship, and declared that these feelings had arisen in Poland from the very beginning of its history and had been strengthened in the difficult moments of its misery.
