Description of Maryla's gazebo and Mickiewicz birch tree in Tuhanovichi

The text describes Maryla's gazebo and the birch tree planted by Adam Mickiewicz in Tuhanowicze, and reproduces 'two views' received from Franciszek Wereszczaki, son of Count Marya of Wereszczaki Putkamerowa (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1872, Series 2, T:10, p. 152, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text.

Maryla's gazebo and Mickiewicz's birch tree in Tuhanovichi.

Ten years ago, we published in Tygodnik Ilustrowany a description of the Mickiewicz home in Nowogródek, as well as the village of Tuhanowicze in Nowogródek, formerly belonging to Marshaless Wereszczakowa, where the poet, a university colleague, usually spent his summer holidays in the company of the village's young heir, Rafał Sliźnia and Jan Czeczot. In this description of Tuhanovich, among other details, we mentioned first Maryla's summerhouse, full of interesting memories, and then a birch tree planted by the poet's own hand, and a stone on which he often read or sat during his morning strolls in the garden, gazing at the beautiful surroundings. Having now received, as a gift from Mr Franciszek Wereszczaki of Hajec, son-in-law of the late Countess Maria of Wereszczaki Putkamerowa, two pictures showing the gazebo and the birch tree with the stone, we are happy to share them with our appreciative public. The gazebo to which Gustav speaks passionately in "Dziady": "Altano, my happiness, cradle and grave!" - decorated with the poet's bust by the present-day village heiress, daughter-in-law of Mrs Putkamerowa, still exists in all its vegetative splendour and is carefully tended and guarded by the whole family; the birch, on the other hand, although equally carefully supported by Mrs Tuhanowska, was damaged by lightning.
