Description of the new Lviv theatre

The text mentions the opening of the new municipal theatre, built to a design by Zygmunt Gorgolewski and constructed "exclusively with Polish forces". The director of the theatre was Tadeusz Pawlikowski, the former director of the Krakow theatre (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1900, Półrocze II, p. 790, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text

New Theatre in Lwow. New and old theatre in Lviv.

The city of Lviv is eagerly awaiting the 4th of October this year: on this day, the living Polish word will be heard for the first time from the stage of the new city theatre. The theatre was supposed to be ready in the spring of this year, but in order to complete it properly, it was necessary to postpone the original date, and even now work has been going on for months, day and night, day and night, day and night, until the last moment, so that the opening date, which had been firmly announced, would not be extended any further.

Today, we will not go into the details of the new theatre building, a detailed description of which was given by the Tygodnik to its readers back in May. The artistic and technical merits of the new, monumental building, constructed exclusively by Polish forces to a design by the architect Zygmunt Gorgolowski, can only be properly assessed, and therefore also discussed in the Tygodnik, when the theatre has been fully completed. Although the press has already voiced criticism here and there, apart from the fact that it is always easier to criticise than to create, it is to be hoped that the scales of merit and recognition will prevail over the scales of faults, flaws and criticism, and the theatre in Lwow, although it will not be able to compare with the capital's theatres built for tens of millions, will turn out to be a worthy tabernacle of our dramatic art, and will be a building that is by no means conventional, practical and monumental.

As is well known, the construction of the new theatre came about thanks to the great generosity of the municipality of Lviv, which was helped by the national parliament, which allocated 300,000 zloty for this purpose. The cost of the entire construction and equipment, including the value of the land, is said to have reached one and a half million zlotys. We would like to remind you that the director of the new theatre is Mr Tadeusz Pawlikowski, the former director of the theatre in Krakow. The new theatre is located at the exit of the so-called Hetman's Bulwarks, one of the most beautiful avenues in Lviv, and its rear facade overlooks Goluchowskis Square. Right in the immediate vicinity of the new, costumed building rises the now deserted, grey and gloomy building of Count Skarbek's theatre. Today it is forgotten in the general interest in the new theatre, yet this building, erected with the generosity of a generous philanthropist, deserved to be well remembered and played an outstanding role in the intellectual life of Lviv and the whole country. For 58 years, amidst the vicissitudes of fate, but always with the banner unfurled wide, our performing arts flourished there. A number of great names in the field of our creative work and in the scenic field of our acting art were inseparably connected with these walls.

The beginning was difficult, the end was not easy, but there were also periods of a golden age for Polish drama and comedy in this theatre. So it was a source of sorrow to part with it on 9 September... A new theatre will now open in its place. May God grant that it picks up the thread of the good tradition of Skarbkowski's theatre and develops it to permanent, genuine splendour!
