Description of the monument to General Pac in Smirno

The text mentions a monument to General Count Ludwik Michał Pac, located in Smirno. A detailed description of the sculpture and the inscription on it is presented (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1898, Półrocze II, p. 582 , after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text

Monument to General Pac in Smirno.

On Smirno's main street, Rue Franque, a narrow vaulted corridor leads to the Church of Saint Polycarp. Here, amidst a cramped courtyard, rises a beautiful white marble monument dedicated to the memory of General Count Louis Michel Pac.

Probably only the parishioners of the church know of its existence, as it is impossible to see it from the street, while hotel guides and druggists know nothing about it.

I have been to Smirno several times and did not even suspect the existence of a memorial such as the mausoleum, dedicated to the memory of a compatriot. If it had not been for the ship's captain's noble helper, who pointed out to me everywhere during our trip the Polish souvenirs hidden in various places in Syria and Asia Minor, I would have passed by the monument this time without seeing it at all.

On a pedestal a couple of metres high rises a beautiful sarcophagus of white marble, creating a whole that is very pleasing to the eye, serious and aesthetically pleasing above all else.

The caption: "Wł. Oloszczyński, 1843" will suffice for any praise.

On the entrance side I read a Latin inscription, the Polish translation of which, engraved on the reverse side of the monument, I enclose in part:

"Ludwik Michał Count Pac
Last descendant of an ancient Lithuanian family.
Lord on Dospuda, Rosary and others.
Major General, Senator, Governor, Member of the Provisional Government,
Vice President of the Polish Society.
Commander of the Order of Virtuti Militari and the French Legion of Honour.
Knight of the Order of St Stanislaus and the Bavarian and Maltese Crosses.
Born in Strasbourg on 19 May 1780.
He fought in the wars of 1808-09-12-13-14, in Spain, Austria, Russia, Germany and under Napoleon.
Wounded several times at Medina del Bio Secco, Burgos, Laon and Ostroleka.
A brave, zealous, modest warrior-landowner.
Fine Arts, Sciences, Protector...
Here, on another man's soil, he died on 31 August 1835.
Compatriot, sigh for his soul...
Wł. Oloszczyński, 1843.".

On the sides are the Pacs' coat-of-arms, Gozdawa, and a bust of the general, depicting a handsome man with noble features, in his thirties or so.

As I was transcribing the inscription engraved on the pedestal, pieces of brick and plaster began to fall onto the sarcophagus from a second-storey window, where some repairs were being carried out. I protested vigorously, and soon the canvas was hung under the window, but a large fragment of brick damaged the marble garland decorating the sarcophagus. I have asked several people I know in Smirno to take care of the monument and all its contents. Most of all I trusted the promise of a good old Frenchman, Mr Rubellin, a local photographer, who also promised to take a picture of the monument.

And so, a few days ago, I received by post from Smirny the photograph I am enclosing here. I must add that the worthy old man refused to accept any payment for it, telling me:

"Le Général l'a déjà payée. Il a versé son sang pour la France.".
