Description of the Polish source in Grefenberg

The text describes the dedication of the Polish spring in Grefenberg. The initiative was shown by the Poles living there, who decided to "imitate other nations" who also have springs. The note also describes the plaque at the spring, which was replaced by a monument decorated with an image of the Virgin Mary of Częstochowa (Source: "Tygodnik Illustrowany", Warsaw 1879, Series 3, T:8, p. 253, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text.

Polish source in Grefenberg.

A few weeks ago, the dedication of the Polish Spring took place in Grefenberg. The history of this spring is as follows: ten years ago, the Poles residing in the village decided to emulate other nations who also had their springs in Grefenberg. In the forest, on the road leading to Nesse-Koppe, they bought a piece of land with a natural spring, which they named the Polish Spring. A small marble plaque with an appropriate inscription was placed at the place where the water gushed out. This plaque lasted a full ten years and only this year gave way to a new memorial, which can be seen in the woodcut shown.
This monument, exceptionally tastefully decorated with an image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, stood on a high foundation, in which a box containing the consecration protocol and the signatures of all the Poles staying in Grefenberg that year was placed during the ceremony. The memorial is made entirely of Silesian marble, acquired from the estate of Dr. Bydropata Mr Schindler, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Grefenberg.
At the same time as the dedication of the spring, the Poles placed three signposts in the Grefenberg forest, with inscriptions in Polish and German, pointing the way to the spring.
The unveiling of the memorial, decorated with flowers, took place to the accompaniment of music playing national melodies, in the presence of several hundred people representing different nationalities: Polish, Russian, German, Czech and Hungarian. The ceremony of setting the box into the base of the monument was performed by Miss Zofia Buczkowska from Warsaw, who also planted a commemorative tree at the spring.

The costs of the memorial and the entire ceremony were covered by the Poles living in Grefenberg.
