Monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Paris

Informacja o obiekcie:

The monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Paris is in the shape of a column, atop which stands the figure of the poet-pilgrim, who holds a staff in his right hand and raises his left hand upwards. The base of the column is decorated with six bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Mickiewicz's works (including Dziady and Konrad Wallenrod), and at the top of the column is a winged figure with a sword - the personification of the epic.

The monument was unveiled in 1928, initially located on the Place d'Alma. Efforts for its creation had already been underway since 1909, when Polish émigrés, together with French intellectuals, set up a committee to build the monument and began fundraising. The author of the monument, the French artist Antoine Bourdelle, designed the monument based on his readings of Mickiewicz's texts; he was also familiar with the history of Polish emigration and the struggle for independence - hence the choice of the figure of the pilgrim and the sculptural quotations from the poet's works. During the reconstruction of Parisian streets in the 1980s, the monument was moved to the park on the Cours Albert I on the banks of the Seine, where it remains to this day.

Adam Mickiewicz lived in Paris from 1832 to 1855 (with interruptions), married here, raised his children, wrote, among other things, "Pan Tadeusz", and worked as a lecturer in Slavic literature at the Collège de France. The unveiling of his monument in 1928 was a manifestation of Polish-French friendship and a major event: the ceremony took place at the Sorbonne, and the international banquet was attended by more than 1,000 people - politicians, ambassadors, scientists, artists and émigré activists.
