Pilsudski and Kosciuszko streets in Rio de Janeiro

The article contains information on the renaming of two streets in Rio de Janeiro as "Marszałka Piłsudskiego Street" and "ul. Tadeusza Kościuszki". This happened thanks to the Polish-Brazilian Society (Source: Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny, Krakow 1936, R. 27, No. 8, p. 3, after: Małopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

Cult of Polish national heroes in Brazil

The Polish-Brazilian press here has only rarely mentioned, in minor articles, the recent initiative to erect several obelisks in the Brazilian state to our memory. This process can be seen with streets in Rio de Janeiro named after Marshal Piłsudski and Tadeusz Kościuszko. The naming of Polish lawtelocrams on private initiative is a credit to some activists, such as prefects and local Brazilian councillors. It should also be noted, as a positive element, that this phenomenon has not lightly measured centres of the nation's lawtelocramas, where it has advised provincial councillors. In these localities (in the province of Rio Grande), a whole plethora of patriotic Polish names have been created, while in the Polish capital proper, Curitiba, nothing has yet been done in this direction, although there is a "Polish-Brazilian Club".

In Rio de Janeiro, on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of independence, thanks to the efforts of the Polish-Brazilian Society, the municipial authority of the capital city solemnly renamed two streets as Marszałek Piłsudski Street and Tadeusz Kościuszko Street. This project was submitted at the City Council meeting by Councillor Mr Janusz Muller, in justification of the wording:

"We therefore presume that the Council will present to the Prefect the matter of the renaming of the current Rocio de Alerce and Junor streets, located in the district of St Anthony, as Marszałek Piłsudski Street and Tadeusza Kościuszko Street.

The great deeds accomplished by Marshal Piłsudski, admirable for his courage, patriotism and devotion to the liberation of Poland, which for a whole century had remained under the yoke of the violence of three countries, would have been sufficient reason for his name to become famous. The universal value of Piłsudski's deeds, however, was a truly invincible barrage against foreign armed forces on Polish territory, thus saving general politics. Tadeusz Kościuszko, the great hero of the ages who sacrificed everything to save his homeland, bore that admirable resilience of a nation that, despite long captivity, was able to preserve its fortitude and culture, so that later, with Piłsudski at its head, the future was resurrected with national fame.

Tens of thousands of Poles in certain agricultural centres are contributing with their work and the idea of news to the extension of the principles of progress and culture in the Brazilian wilderness. Signed by Janusz Muller, Monroe Nolire, Jorge Mafioa, Attila Soares, Henrique Macpioli, Juliana Araujo and Ernani Orilowo.

Coming from themselves - 13 August 1935 In the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, the avenue 'Avenida da Industria' was renamed 'Avenida Polonia'. In the same province, in the municipality of Guarani, which included a large number of Polish settlers, an obelisk to Tadeusz Kosciuszko was erected and the square was named "Kosciuszko Square". In the municipium of Dos Matos, a monument named 'Marszałek Piłsudski' was unveiled four days ago, and not far from the square the 'Praça Polonia'. In northern Paraná there are settlements with distinctive names: Nowa Warszawa, Nowa Krakow, Nowa Wola, Warta, Orle and Murawska Wola.
