Memorial plaque to J. Pilsudski on the Kahlenberg

A short note describes the initiative of the Austrian Polish community, which, in agreement with Warsaw, decided to commemorate Piłsudski by erecting a plaque in the Sobieski Chapel on Kahlenberg. The plaque was to be permanently embedded in the wall of the presbytery at the entrance to the chapel, and decorated with a bas-relief of Piłsudski (Source: Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny, Cracow 1936, no. 108, p. 6, after: Małopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

Memorial plaque in honour of Marsz. Piłsudski on the Kahlenberg

Immediately after the Marshal's death, the Polish émigré community in Austria decided to commemorate the Commander-in-Chief by erecting a commemorative plaque on the Kahlenberg, at the entrance to the historic Chapel of King Sobieski, as the place that had witnessed the crowning triumph of Polish arms in the battle against the pagan half. The Union of Polish Associations in Vienna also made direct contact with the Supreme Committee for the Commemoration of the Marshal in Warsaw, asking for support for this plan, as well as with the local Polish Association, which immediately approved it.

There is no doubt that the only place to commemorate the Marshal is the Sobieski Chapel on Kahlenberg. A commemorative plaque in memory of the Marshal should be embedded for eternity in this very chapel, which is a monument to the glory of the Polish military. The honorary patronage of the ceremony at Kahlenberg was assumed by General Wieniawa-Długoszowski and the Vice-President of the World Union of Poles, Hłczyński. Preparations for the commemorative plaque laying ceremony are in full swing. This plaque, one metre long and 71-75 cm wide, will be embedded in the wall of the presbytery at the entrance to King Sobieski's chapel, with a bas-relief depicting the Marshal being made by the sculptor Professor Wojciech Jastrzębowski of Warsaw.
