Decoration of St. Anna Church in Opfikon-Glattbrugg

Variants of the name:

Malerische Ausstattung der Kirche St. Anna in Opfikon-Glattbrugg

The concrete church of the Catholic parish of Glattbrugg was built between 1955 and 1956, but in its present form it was shaped in 1981-1982 according to a design by Zurich architect Rudolf Mathys, among other things because of the need for sound insulation due to the proximity to the airport. The pentagonal nave space is dominated by a decoration by the Krakow artist Jan Januuary Janczak, who had already settled in Switzerland at the time, which was created in connection with this transformation. The huge altar painting (entitled 'Befreiung'), which hangs on the back wall of the church behind the altar mensa as the main element of the temple's ideological programme, consists of seven wings of different sizes, forming a whole reminiscent of medieval polyptychs. It depicts the eponymous liberation of mankind as a result of the whole of sacred history: the largest central section depicts the crucified Christ in the glory of the Resurrection, with the Pieta below. The side wings, on the other hand (opened according to the season of the liturgical year, but always in an arrangement of five images), show scenes of: King David in the Kingdom of Peace, the Crossing of the Red Sea, the Tower of Babel and the Call of Abraham (left panel); the Miraculous Healing of the Lame Woman and Jacob's Struggle with the Angel; and Jacob's Dream, Breaking Bread with the Faithful (right panel). Such a theologically rich programme has no references in Polish painting of the time, and in Swiss art it also appears unique.

In the side chapel, adjacent on the right side to the chancel section of the church, Janczak also realised a narrow, high stained glass "Magnificat" (signed "Janczak" and "atelier A. Enkeler") in 1982. The four stained-glass windows in the south wall of the nave, depicting the story of the Creation of the universe, the earth and the plants, the animals and the people, were funded by the parishioners and only made in 2008, also by Janczak (signed "Jan Janczak" at the lower edge of the windows, window height approx. 2 m).
