Polish Airmen Cemetery in Newark-upon-Trent

Founded in 1856, the cemetery contains a war quarter, which is the largest concentration of Polish war graves in England. There are 397 Polish soldiers buried who died during the Second World War. The vast majority are soldiers who served in the Polish Air Force. The central place is occupied by a monumental cross unveiled in 1941. Among those buried at the cemetery are the presidents of Poland in exile - Władysław Raczkiewicz (died 1947), August Zaleski (died 1972) and Stanisław Ostrowski (died 1982). Their remains were exhumed and transferred to Poland in 2022, but their gravestone monuments were preserved as a symbolic burial place. In addition, General Władysław Sikorski, among others, was buried in the cemetery.
