Graves of victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA)

During the Second World War, especially from August 1943 onwards, refugees from the surrounding villages and Polish settlements, harassed by the armed attacks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, came to the town in large numbers. Buried at the local cemetery were the victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army from the villages of Borki (7 people murdered in September 1943), Czmykos (1 person out of ca. 240 murdered on 29.08.1943), Horodno (1 person murdered on 20.04.1943), Kąty (22 people out of ca. 150 murdered on 30.08.1943).
At present it is not possible to pinpoint the exact location of these graves. At the beginning of the 21st century, descendants of the Macegoniuk family, murdered in Kąty, built a symbolic grave of their murdered relatives in the cemetery. It is a tall metal black cross on a small white concrete tombstone, which bears a plaque with the inscription: "In this / cemetery are buried / The late / Macegoniuk Michał / Macegoniuk Magdalena / Macegoniuk Stanisław / Macegoniuk Kazimierz / Macegoniuk Jan / died tragically / 30 VIII 1943 / May they rest in peace / Family".
