On 22-27 October 1915, dozens of soldiers of the Polish Legions, fighting alongside the Austro-Hungarian army, fell in battle against the Russians at Kuklami. The names of 21 of the fallen are known, but one of them was buried in Maniewicze. After the end of the fighting, Father Jozef Panaś, the legionaries' chaplain, buried the fallen Poles in the cemetery in Kukle. They were laid to rest in 3 mass graves - some of them rested here immediately after the battle, others were buried a few months later, after exhumation from temporary graves in the area. Their graves, situated next to each other, formed a compact quarter.
After the Second World War, these graves were forgotten and obliterated. In 2016, Polish scouts from the Lodz ZHP Scouting Group, together with Polish archaeologists, found the quarters and redecorated them. Birch crosses were placed on the graves (the same ones that were here before World War II) and the quarters were fenced. The site is taken care of, financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage under the programme "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad".
