Commemoration of Maximilian Kolbe at the Mariahilferkirche in Graz

The Mariahilferkirche church and monastery complex in Graz contains three works dedicated to St Maximilian Kolbe.

The first work, by Karl Steiner, was created in 1968 and is located in the cloister of the church. It consists of a memorial plaque and an image of Our Lady with Child. The text on the plaque presents the most important facts of Kolbe's life: his publishing activities, his mission in Nagasaki and his death in Auschwitz in 1941.

The second work of art is a terracotta bas-relief by Alojzija Ulman from 1983, also located in the cloister of the church. It depicts Kolbe in the Franciscan habit, with his arms outstretched and a serene gaze. The background is formed by stylised fragments of masonry and a halo of thorns.

The third work, also by Alojzija Ulman from 1983, is a sculpture set up in the south side aisle of the church. It depicts Kolbe in camp garb, with a rosary in his right hand and a prisoner number on his chest.

The text contains basic information about the object. If you have any further information, please feel free to contact !
