Polish chronicles: new schools in Brazil and the Mickiewicz monument in Paris

Excerpts from local chronicles in the magazine 'News from Poland'. This issue mentions the construction of new Catholic schools in the state of Rio Grande de Sul, as well as the dedication of the new home of the Sisters of Charity in Paraná. In Paris, in turn, a monument to A. Mickiewicz is being erected. The sculpture, chiseled by Bourdelle, is nearing completion. The note mentions a description of the monument and details of the casting (Source: "Wieści z Polski", Warsaw 1929, R: 2, no. 1, p. 28, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

Polish Catholic Youth Academy. in Brazil.

For several years there has existed at the University of Curitiba in Paraná an organisation of Polish Catholic youth, "Sarmation", grouping Poles, sons of colonists. This association has now embarked on the construction of its own building, which will house the organisation's premises, library and dormitory.

The new facility of the Polish Sisters of Charity in Paraná.

In Arancaria, a city in the state of Paraná, Brazil, the dedication of the new Sisters of Charity house took place last month. During the ceremony, the local parish priest gave a solemn sermon in Polish and Brazilian to a large crowd of Polish colonists.

Polish Catholics in Brazil build schools.

On the initiative of Fr K. Zajkowski, the Polish colonists of Correla Neto and Silvestre Correia erected a beautiful Catholic school building in the Felician colony, in the state of Rio Grande de Sul. Last week a ceremony was held to dedicate the new school, during which Father Pastor Zajkowski and the teacher, Mrs A. Brzoskowska, spoke.

The awarding of a Polish sculptor.

Our compatriot in Paraná, Mr Zak, an honoured sculptor, creator of the "Sower" statue and a no less talented painter, received a new gold medal from the National Salon in Rio, for six artistically executed sculptural works: "Girl with Masks", "Sisyphus", "Motherhood" and others. In 1924, the same National Salon awarded Mr Zak the Grand Silver Medal for his work "The Sower".

Ships with Polish personnel.

In the only Polish magazine in Brazil, published twice a week under the name "Lud", we read: "...An extraordinary positive impression is made on our emigrants by the sea voyage on ships with Polish service from Poland to South America. We spoke in Prudentopolis with two Russian emigrants who came on the 'Krakus' from Gdynia to Santos.

On the ship they felt none of the foreignness into which every emigrant usually fell with joining; on the "Krakus" there was exemplary cleanliness, excellent Polish cuisine, service exclusively Polish full of courtesy. The emigrants spent their evenings on the ship's deck, where Polish officers-mariners gave them various useful talks. In general, the emigrants - in this case, Ruthenians from the Ternopil-Mikulmieć region - found the voyage on the "Krakus" from the "Chargeurs Reuns" company a real pleasure.
