Evangelical Cemetery in Karviná

In Karviná, in the Doły district (also known as Kopalnie), now almost entirely deserted owing to mining subsidence, lies the Evangelical cemetery. It stood near the workers’ colonies Karviná Meksyk and Karviná Nowy Jork. The ground is level and the alleys form a regular grid; headstones are set parallel to them, though the mid-plot arrangement has been partly effaced. On the cemetery’s central axis stands a chapel in Neo-Gothic forms. Comparison with 1960s aerial photographs suggests that almost all gravestones survive, but many are fragmentary or heavily damaged. During the documentation campaign more than 500 burial places were recorded, a little over one fifth retaining legible inscriptions. Most inscriptions are in Polish and Czech, with a few in German. Memorials to miners killed in pit accidents are preserved: in 1917, Wiktor Szurman and Karol Suchanek; in 1924, Adolf Badura, Karol Dziadek and Henryk Tyrlik; and in 1912, Paweł Milereski. Almost all monuments are preceded by slabs or paving bands. Vertical elements are principally steles, with fewer crosses on pedestals and occasional aedicules. Most monuments display modernised forms. A few retain oval porcelain portrait photographs. The structures are mainly of concrete, reinforced concrete or terrazzo. Vertical elements are also found in sandstone, Silesian marble and granite; in several cases marble is used for plaques or details, for example on the graves of Anna and Adolf Lange or the Witoszek family.
