The note summarises a meeting of the restoration committee, which reported on the progress of the work and identified the most urgent needs and the next plans for implementing the restoration. The reconstruction of the royal old castle and garrison church.

A meeting of the Committee for the Reconstruction of the Royal Old Castle and Garrison Church was held here in one of the rooms of the former royal castle. It was chaired by General Litvinovich, commander of the O.K. III. After the meeting was opened by General Litvinovich and the adoption of the minutes and reports on the work carried out, the meeting proceeded to discuss the programme of the forthcoming work on the reconstruction of the Royal Old Castle and the Garrison Church. Having obtained the decision of the competent authorities on the destination of the castle, it was decided to proceed immediately to the announcement of a competition for the castle reconstruction projects.

Closely linked to the castle reconstruction is the problem of securing Castle Hill, which is being eroded by the floods of the Nemunas, the construction of riverside boulevards, and the regulation of the immediate surroundings of the hill from the town side through the installation of a street and an exit to the boulevards from the castle side. At the same time, the committee discussed the issue of securing the early medieval excavations in the castle courtyard and further work on Castle Hill. It was decided to ask the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment to set up an archaeological and conservation commission to give its opinion and guidance on the excavations.

The garrison church was further discussed. The committee accepted the report of Fr Dean Suchecki on the work carried out and noted the programme for further reconstruction work. To date, the scarps have been rebuilt, the vestry aisle has been added, the tower has been rebuilt and the church roof has been erected, the chancel has been restored to its former appearance by demolishing the Russian former vaults and the chancel has been covered with a new vault at its original height, with the former rainbow restored.

Five stone windows were set in the chancel windows, reconstructed from the surviving fragments of the original windows. After a survey of the internal walls, a number of niches of Renaissance character were uncovered, both in the chancel and in the gable and side walls of the church, with the wall inside the tower being re-pierced to accommodate the organ choir. The following work is planned for the current season: glazing and installation of all windows, construction of 2 annexes to the tower, plastering of the walls outside and inside the church, finishing of the organ loft and partial installation of the interior.
