Janov Castle

The text describes the Podolia town of Janów, where the palace of the heirs, i.e. Counts Chołoniewski, is built. It used to be a fortified castle - the text follows its detailed description (Source: "Ziemia. Tygodnik Krajoznawczy Ilustrowany', Warsaw 1911, no. 16, p. 4, after: Wielkopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

Castle in Janów

The town of Yaniv in Vinnytsya in Podil, situated at the mouth of the Snivvodka River on the Boh river, like most small towns owes everything interesting it has to souvenirs of the past. On the bank of the Snivodka, on the other side adjoining the local market square, stands the palace of Janov's heirs, the counts Choloniewski - once a fortified castle, the remains of the corner towers of which have survived; the front tower in beautiful Baroque lines, crowned with a huge stork's nest, towers over a vaulted gate, to which a bridge leads across a partially preserved moat, with chains attached to it, as if to remind the profane that it was once a drawbridge.

Unfortunately, apart from this, the entire frontage, as well as other buildings, bears numerous traces of later alterations, during which, as can be seen, neither the style nor the character of the former building were cared for at all. The Sniwoda river flowing nearby and the Boh river a little further away, spreading among low meadows and marshes, must have been the strongest fortification of the castle, as otherwise the surroundings are flat and difficult to defend. The castle is still the residence of Count Choloniewski. Other noteworthy sights in the town include the Baroque church and the original spacious market square, built on the model of an eastern square caravanserai, with a tall quadrilateral tower at the front.
