New People's House in Zurawno

The text describes the consecration of the newly built People's House in Zhuravna. The realisation of this project was, as stated in the text, thanks to the assistance of the Stanislav voivode, General Paslavski. The text is accompanied by a photograph of the ceremony (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1938, no. 109, p. 7, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

The consecration of the T.S.L. People's House in Zurawno named after Governor General Stefan Paslawski.

A beautiful ceremony was held in Zhuravna, a town situated on the estuary of the Świtsa River to the Dniester, known as the birthplace of Nicolai Rej, famous for the battle that Jan Sobieski fought against the Tatars near this town, and now famous for its alabaster products. In the centre of the town, a large crowd of citizens and local people gathered to take part in the consecration of the People's House. The idea to build the House had already been conceived in 1925, when the T.S.L. bought a beautiful plot of land from foreign hands. The original plan to build a large building to house all the local institutions, organisations and shops did not come to fruition due to the very high cost of the building.

Instead, the plan was to build a single-storey building to house the T.S.L., Z.S. and other social organisations on the ground floor with a relatively large hall and 3 common rooms, and the municipal court on the first floor. The project was realised thanks to the cooperation of the T.S.L. and the Z.S., the generous help of the Governor of Stanislavl Province, General Paslavsky, the self-help of Mr Gallus, Rev. Czartoryska and the local people. A generous donation was made on the day of consecration by the Parcel Society. It is thanks to the president of the S.O. Dr. Polakiewicz that Żurawno has placed the premises of the municipal court in the People's House, which, thanks to a fixed rent, will make a significant contribution to the construction costs.

The construction was managed by a committee consisting of Rev. Markowicz, the head of the court Mr. Turczanski, the vice-mayor Mr. Kozlowski, Dr. Robaczowski and members of the board of directors under the leadership of the mayor Mr. Mieczyslaw Niepokulczycki. The dedication ceremony was attended by the Governor, Gen. Paslawski, the Starost Mr. Gallus, representatives of the army with Col. Kocur, President Polakiewicz, President of the T.S.L. Board Dr. Ułuna, Rev. Czartoryska, representatives of local government and organisations. After a solemn Holy Mass, celebrated by Rev. St. Ostachowicz, the consecration of the building took place, after which Dr. Uluna spoke to those gathered on the square in front of the Folk House from the balcony.

Referring to the November celebrations of the 20th anniversary of Independence, he recalled the stages of the struggle for freedom and the role that the T.S.L. played in this struggle, raising the national awareness of the Polish people, building schools, dormitories, establishing reading rooms and people's houses. The speech ended with Dr. Uluna shouting in honour of the Republic, the President and the Commander-in-Chief. The troops of the Z.S., the fire brigade and the numerous crowds of the population thunderously echoed this shout, and the orchestra played the national anthem. The mayor of the town, Mr Niepokulczycki, presented the history of the construction of the People's House, thanked all those who had contributed to this work and assured them that social work would radiate from the Zurawno People's House with perseverance and purpose.

At the end, a reception was held in the hall of the People's House for guests and representatives of the local society, among whom the bourgeoisie was represented in large numbers. Several hours were spent in a very pleasant atmosphere. Governor General Pasławski gave a speech, pointing out the importance of a concerted, creative effort, from which positive achievements are made, enhancing the strength of the Polish state and society. President Dr Polakiewicz and starosta Mr Gallus thanked the organisers of the construction of the House.
