Folk House in Postolówka

An article describing the consecration of the newly erected People's House in Postolówka. The house was given a patron in the shape of J. Piłsudski, and a plaque bearing his name was unveiled (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1938, no. 85, p. 6, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

The peasants of Postołówka built the People's House with their own hard work and dedication.

On Sunday, 22 May, there was unusual traffic in the Kopyčín district. A lot of people were travelling on foot, on horse-drawn carts and in lorries to Postołówka, where the consecration of the House of the People was to take place in the presence of the Governor Tomasz Malicki. From the early morning hours crowds of villagers, the army, Z. S. "Sokolswo" troops from Kopyczyniec and Husiatyn, scouts, social organisations with teachers and clergy at the forefront gathered. The road from the triumphal gate to the People's House was beautifully decorated with long national flags hanging from high masts. The houses of the people were decorated with flags in the national colours and greenery.

At 12 o'clock the Governor and the Mayor of Gródek arrived. Major Gallowski and Rev. Dean Tenerowicz from Kopyczyniec also arrived. The Governor was warmly welcomed by the Head of the village, Mr Pichl, and the Chairman of the People's House Building Committee, Ing. Nowicki. Everyone went to a field mass, celebrated by Rev. Dean Tenerowicz. A solemn sermon was preached by Fr Jan Wilusz, parish priest from Kluwlniec. During the Mass, the K.O.P. orchestra played. The consecration of the House was performed by Fr Frankov, the local parish priest. After the consecration of the House, the Governor unveiled a commemorative plaque of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, which was embedded in the wall of the house also named after the Resurrector of Poland.

The K.O.P. orchestra played the National Anthem. The fact that the People's House was named after the Great Marshal by the borderland population testifies to the fervent and eloquent love of the Polish peasantry for our greatest Hero. After paying tribute to the Grand Marshal on the occasion of the unveiling of the plaque, the chairman, Eng. Nowicki, came out on the stand to report on the hard work done by the Poles of Postołówka in connection with the construction of the House, under his leadership. We found it hard to believe that the brick house, consisting of a large theatre hall and seven smaller rooms, cost a mere seven thousand zlotys.

However, this is what the most accurate calculations show. The house represents a value of more than 30 000 zlotys. So about 23 000 zlotys was the work of a Polish peasant from Postołówka, which ranged from 2 to 20 days, and donations in kind. Count Siemieński, the starost of Gródek, also gave considerable help," said Mr Nowicki, "he helped us materially and, above all, morally. He very often offered good advice and guidance. Therefore, the chairman expressed his special thanks to the starost. The second speech was delivered by Fr Franków, and the third by Mr Gączowski, who pointed out the great work done by the peasants of Postołówka in erecting such a beautiful Folk House, which is also a monument to our greatest of the Great - the Hero. After Mr G±towski's speech, the crowd of around 5,000 spontaneously sang the anthem "We will not throw the earth".

It was a very solemn moment, and one could feel that, in this way, the Polish peasants, faced with the commemorative plaque of the Marshal and the Government Representative, were making an oath that they would never give up our land, soaked in the blood of a Polish soldier, to anyone. This moment, as well as the experience, will long remain in the memories of the participants of the ceremony in Postołówka. The parade was impressive. Afterwards, the guests, headed by the Governor, went into the hall for a meal. Here a special Section of the Committee headed by Lieutenant K.O.P. prepared a number of activities of an entertaining nature.

There was an excellent theatrical performance, then the four-voice choir from Trybuchowce under the direction of Mr Opacki, the headmaster of that school, sang several songs, and at the end a group of young people from Samołuskowiec led by Mr Stankiewicz, a teacher at the secondary school, performed and gave a beautiful rendition of songs. At the end, the girls from the re-enactment group presented Mr Governor with bread. A number of speeches were made and several toasts were given, above all in honour of the Governor of the Voivodship and the Army, which was given by President Dr Orlinski from Ternopil.
