The new church and the Folk House in Szydłowiec

The article mentions the consecration of the new Roman Catholic church and the People's House in Šidlovce. The consecration was performed by Fr Tenerowicz, while the building of the People's House was handed over for use by Starosta Grodecki. The article is accompanied by a photograph of the newly built DL (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1937, no. 52, p. 7, after: the Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

In Szydłowiec a new church and a People's House.

A double ceremony was held in Šiluva, Kopyčince district: the consecration of a Roman-Catholic church and a "People's House". The ceremony was honoured, among others, by the starost Mr Piotr Grodecki, Major Galinowski, Father Dean Tenerowicz, major heads of district authorities and offices and the surrounding Polish population. The newcomers were greeted quietly and modestly by the local mayor, next to the welcome gate which had been erected, expressing his joy at a celebration so dear to the hearts of the Polish population. The church was consecrated by Father Tenerowicz, who read out an occasional pastoral letter sent by Archbishop Twardowski to the faithful living in Szydłowiec.

During the service, a solemn speech was delivered by Fr Sawicki from Wasylkowiec. In turn, a large crowd went to the consecration and opening of the "House of the People", located on a significant hill in the area, which offers a beautiful view of the entire countryside, all the way to the Zbruch River. The head of the district administration, Mr Grodecki, in his speech said that the people of Šiluva, thanks to their foresight and passionate love for their Catholic faith and for their motherland, have given themselves the best possible testimony not only for these, but also for future generations.

May these two buildings, the Church and the People's House, be modern fortresses in the spiritual sense, capable of withstanding decades of honourable service to the benefit of the Church and the Polish Nation. This was followed by a parade of the assembled military and PW units. The following marched: a company of the K.O.P., a company of the Z.S., the Fire Brigade with an unfurled banner from Huslatyn, a Samaritan team of the O.S.P., a branch of the "Sokol" from Huslatyn, a female branch of the Catholic Youth Association. Those gathered then went to the People's House for a modest meal, during which musical productions were performed by the school mandolin ensemble from Huslatyn, consisting of about 40 male and female pupils.

During the breakfast, an ad hoc collection was held for the purpose of carrying out educational work - it yielded about 200 zloty. In the evening a folk party was held, which stretched in a pleasant mood until midnight. A minor detail accompanying the Szydłowiec celebrations is worth noting. On the other side of the Zbruch River, in spite of the strict prohibitions of the Soviet authorities against watching the celebrations, one could see among the hidden heads of civilians in the bushes and thickets how they watched with envy everything that was happening on the Polish side. It should be mentioned that considerable efforts to build the church were made by Captain Jędrzejowski, indefatigable in his endeavours, Sergeant Kasprzak and all the soldiers of the K.O.P.-u.
