Description of the competition for the Mickiewicz monument in Vilnius

The text describes the awarding of the first prize for the Mickiewicz monument in Vilnius. The winner turns out to be Stanisław Szukalski, an American Pole temporarily residing in Paris. It goes on to describe this and other projects that will also not be realised. It is mentioned that the competition committee will probably have to announce another plebiscite (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1926, Półrocze II, p. 821, after: University of Łódź Digital Library).

Conclusion of the competition for the "Mickiewicz Monument in Vilnius"

Almost all of Vilnius was moved by the awarding of the first prize of the competition (10,000 zlotys) to an almost completely unknown sculptor-artist, Stanislaw Szukalski, an American Pole who had been in Paris for a long time. It was a strong revelation of uncommon talent and profound artistic culture. Szukalski's project has high sculptural qualities, outstanding originality, freshness of artistic invention, unparalleled precision of execution, excellent, unparalleled architecture.

It exhibits a figure symbolising the work accomplished by Mickiewicz and his spiritual individuality. This figure has taken under his arm an eagle settled on a rainbow and symbolising Poland or the Polish nation - and feeds it with his own heartfelt blood. This, to a considerable extent, "charade" or "rebus" of the composition will undoubtedly stand in the way of erecting a monument to Mickiewicz in Vilnius according to Szukalski's design. Neither will the model awarded the second prize (PLN 8,000) out of 67 projects, a work of the young artist from Vilnius, Mr Rafał Jakimowicz, be realised. The third prize (PLN 6,000) went to Mr Mieczysław Lubelski from Warsaw for a work that will also remain after the competition - a souvenir.

A flattering distinction was given to a design under the emblem "Granite"; the jury recommended that the committee building the monument should possibly purchase a statue of Mickiewicz under the emblem "Ode to Youth". As none of the designs submitted will be realised, the committee will soon have to decide whether to hold a new competition or to ask individual artists for a model. Popular opinion votes in favour of using the model under the emblem "Siewca" for the monument, after some corrections have been made.
