Cemetery and chapel in Szata

In the small village of Šiauliai, there is a charming cemetery where in the 19th century the local nobility , representatives of the Veliko, Hoppen, Roub and Gintov families, were buried .

Between Vilkomír and Kėdainiai is located the small town of Šėta, on the river Abela. It used to be the hereditary estate of the Petkevichs, of whom Bohdan, who owned, besides Šatiai, Nidoki and Abel, erected a parish church in the village , funded in 1499 . At the end of the 16th century, the temple was converted into a Lutheran church, and several decades later it was re-consecrated in the Roman Catholic rite. On the initiative of the next parish priest, Fr Chrzczonowicz, a new temple was built after the fire of 1779, consecrated Holy Trinity in 1817. (rebuilt 1900).

There was a cemetery next to the first temples in Szaty, but when the new church was built, in accordance with the Enlightenment regulations and Russian law (a decree from 1772 ordering cemeteries to be established outside settlements, which was also introduced in the territories annexed to Russia after the partitions of the Republic) , the necropolis was established outside the village boundaries . It was located on the road to Kėdainiai, i.e. on the western side, on the axis of the church, less than 400 m away. About 500 m south-west of the new cemetery a Jewish cemetery was also established for the Jewish community of Shat.

The cemetery has been enlarged several times, hence its plan is now out of shape , although it was originally given a quadrilateral form. A few years after it was erected, a burial chapel of St. Bogumiła was built on it. The chapel was built by Stanislav Wieliczka (1791-1860), a Kaunas bailiff and Vilycomrad border judge, for his wife, Bogumila of Rudomin (d. 1824). The woman died at the age of just 24, having orphaned two small daughters, Bogumiła and Adela. The couple had a timber-framed manor house with a portico in Pošumíř (Pašumeris), about 4 km west of Šatiai. The village belonged to the parish of Šatiai, hence Stanisław Wieliczka chose this cemetery for the burial of his wife, and in the future for himself and his family.

The chapel was built in the then popular classicist style with a four-column portico in Tuscan order facing the town. Its form is very interesting as it combines the form of a burial chapel with catacombs, hence it has no basement. It therefore has a rectangular plan divided asymmetrically into two parts. The eastern part contains the chapel proper with an altar in which the crucifix - the sign of salvation - is placed. The western section is arranged with three-storey catacombs, up to about half the height of the interior. In the pediment is the eye of Divine Providence, and below it an inscription arranged in metal letters "DEO: OMNIPOTENTI:" (to God Almighty). Above the portal is the date "1824" and an oculus illuminating the interior, framed by two rows of niches. There are a pair of windows in the side walls and Tuscan pilasters in the corners. At the back, so in the western wall, an inscription is placed: "GROB(OVI): HOUSE: WIELICZK(S):", below which is a semi-circular window and a three-storey catacomb for eighteen coffins. Only one plaque survives - a marble one, with the inscription: "A grieving husband and father shed tearful tears here / Having buried his wife and son and all his hopes / Here rests the remains of Constance Constance of Wieliczkow / HOPPENOWEY with her son KAZIMIERZ / Deceased 1839. Sierp. 23 d. aged 26. / and Her son r. 1841. Lut. 24 d. aged Lat. 6. m. 6. / I ask for the Souls to sigh to God".

Inside the chapel, a confessional has been preserved, as well as a marble epitaph plaque by the altar . Its field is divided into two parts. On the left side is the inscription: "D.O.M. / Here lie / the remains of the late P. / Stanislaus / WIELICZKI / born d. May 3, 1791 / died d. 4 Sept. 1860", and to the right: D.O.M. / BOGUMIŁA z RUDOMINOW / WIELICZKOWA / PREZESOWA GRODZKA WIŁKOMIERSKA / ZYŁA LAT 24. / ZESZŁA Ru 1824. / JUNII 7. DNIA. / To the Memory of a Dear Wife and Best Mother / This Sign of Mournful Loss is laid by Husband and Children / Passer-by, which Holiness calls thee to this place / Sigh today over her Shadow! May she eternally rest:".

In the upper part are the coats of arms of the spouses: Abdank and Trump. By the west wall there is a staircase leading to the attic. The Wieliczka chapel was renovated in 2012.

It is not the only chapel in the Szaty cemetery. Another, much smaller and more modest one was erected on the north side of the Wieliczka Chapel. It was built after 1850 on a rectangular plan and covered with a gable roof. Its corners are framed by lisens. Three epitaph plates with inscriptions have been preserved on it : "Here lie the remains / of the late Emilia / Roubów by 1m Husband / HOPPENOWA / by 2m DREWANOWSKA / died 1877 June 7 d. / aged 57 years / God! receive her soul / to His glory", "Leon / HOPPEN / d. 18 March 1856 / Life of 52 years / For the Best Husband / Father Wife and Daughter / dedicate this memorial" and "+ / S. P. / Michael / ROUBA / died 14 Mar 1881 / aged 64 / Rest his soul!".

In the cemetery there are monuments from the 19th century with inscriptions in Polish, as well as a tombstone in the form of a cottage with a cast iron plaque with the inscription : "Ś. P. ELŻBIETA z ZDANOWICZÓW / MARTUSEWICZOWA / UM. D. 1 JUNE 1887. / BEING 23 YEARS OLD / ASKS FOR A HAIL MARY." It was placed in the façade, above two vents. The gabled roof of the chapel was originally covered with ceramic tiles. The small sepulchral form was probably created in the 1st half of the 19th century.
