Cemetery of the Specposiolka Česjel

The Chesile special settlement was founded in 1930 by 'deported' peasants from the southern regions of Russia and the Vitebsk region. Among them were also Poles. In 1940, transports of Polish citizens, so-called 'settlers', deported from the Polish territories annexed to the USSR in 1939, passed through Czesjel. Later, Poles from other special settlements in the area were transferred here. The regime of the special settlement was abolished after the amnesty of 12.08.1941. The last Polish families left in May 1944, and the settlement became deserted.
The cemetery for the deportees was arranged in the coniferous forest on a hill. Presumably, there were two cemeteries in the settlement - an Orthodox and a Catholic one, on the banks of the river Luvla, about 500 m from the settlement. When the specposiolk ceased to exist in the mid-1950s, both cemeteries, left unattended, deteriorated. According to the recollections of a resident of a nearby settlement, in the 1970s the grave mounds and crosses were still preserved in the cemetery, of which there is now no trace. Neither the number nor name lists of those buried in the cemetery can be established.
The burial site was found and investigated in the summer of 2007 by an expedition of high school students from the villages of Letka and Mutnyj. A wooden Catholic cross with a plaque in Polish was found on one of the graves: "...NSKI KAZIMIERZ 1869-1940". As a result of archival research and interviews with the indigenous population, historians determined with high probability that this was Kazimierz Garguliński (1869-1940) - a deported Pole who died during transport near specposiolk Czesjel on 14.08.1940 and was buried by local Poles.
