Celebrations in France in honour of J. Pilsudski

A short text describing celebrations in a number of localities in France to commemorate J. Piłsudski and the anniversary of the 3rd May Constitution. Mention is made, among other things, of emigration meetings in Ostricourt and the laying of a wreath at the monument to Poles killed in the battles of Saint Vaast, La Torgette and Carancy (Source: "Dziennik Polski", Czeski Cieszyn 1939, R: 6, no. 134, p. 2, after: Silesian Digital Library).

Emigration reunites with the Homeland. Polish celebrations in France.

PARIS, 15.5. (PAT). Over the course of Sunday 14 bm. in many towns and cities in northern France inhabited by Poles, ceremonies were held to commemorate Marshal Józef Piłsudski, linked to the anniversary of the 3rd May Constitution. The assemblies, held in overcrowded halls in the mines, were attended by several thousand people. Numerous speakers from among the émigrés emphasised, to the general enthusiasm of those gathered, the unbreakable knots linking Polish emigration in France with the entire Polish nation, and the constant readiness of the émigrés to serve their homeland.

The General Secretary of the Polish Academy of Literature, Kaden-Bandrowski, who was staying in France and who, in the company of the General Consul in Lille, Kawalkowski, had taken part in major emigration meetings in Adscon, Sallaumines and Ostricourt, acquainted the emigrants with the atmosphere prevailing in Poland in his speeches, which were interrupted by a storm of applause. The solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to Poles killed in 1915 at the battles of Saint-Vaast, La Torgette and Carancy was attended by several hundred members of Polish veterans' organisations in France and delegates of French veterans. A speech at the monument to the fallen Poles was delivered by Consul General Kawałkowski. This was followed by a service in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Lorette, rising on the site of one of the major battles of the World War.
