Cemetery of Opoczno sub-camp of the camp complex no. 270

The forest camp (commonly known as Waldlager in German) was one of six sub-camps in the complex of camps No. 270 Borovichi, established by the NKVD in 1941. It was numbered 16. It served as a so-called OK, or health commando, for elderly people in the third category of health and exhausted from work in the coal mines. It housed mainly German prisoners of war. In 1945, starting in early spring, around 500 Poles were transferred in several groups to the forestry camp, from the camps in Jogle and Szybotowo, as well as some of those unable to work in the Ust camp and the municipal camp in Borovichi. Here, Poles worked in logging and timber floating and, in the most numerous groups, in field work at the kolkhozes. In December 1945, a selection of POWs was carried out - they were divided into two categories: those returning to the country and those still in the camps.
In the cemetery of this sub-camp, 25 Poles who died in the Waldlager were buried. The cemetery is located in the north-eastern part of the village, on the right side of the river Msty. In September 1994, as part of a ceremony in Borowicze, the burial place of the Poles was marked with a wooden cross. The surroundings of the cross were paved with flagstones and a plaque was nailed to a nearby tree with the inscription in Russian: "ЗДЕС ПОКОЯТСЯ ПОЛЬСКИЕ СОЛДАТЫ ЖЕРТВЫ ГИТЛЕРИЗМА СКОНЧАВШИЕСЯ В ПЛЕНУ У НАС ОДНА ЗЕМЛЯ СКЛОНИТЕ ГОЛОВЫ ПЕРЕД МОГИЛОЙ ПРОСТЫХ СМЕРТНЫХ". Translated into Polish, the inscription reads: 'Here lie Polish soldiers, victims of Hitler, who died in captivity. We have one ground. Bow your head before the grave of ordinary mortals".
