Holy Trinity Church in Volchin, Belarus

A short note on the history of the Holy Trinity Church in Volchin, Belarus, and the establishment of a committee to raise funds for the renovation of the church. The information was published in the journal "Sztuki Piękne",1931, no. 10, p. 385 (public domain, reprinted from the Library of the University of Silesia, Katowice).

A modernised reading of the text.

Wołczyn in the Brześć poviat, today a forgotten "capital" of the commune and parish, had its times of splendour and historical significance. The Wołczyn key once belonged to the Czartoryski and Poniatowski families, who had their residence here for many years. It was also here that the Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski, son of Stanisław and Konstancja Poniatowska, née Czartoryska, was born in 1732. Stanisław Poniatowski built a church in Wolczyn, which still exists today. The church, once converted into an orthodox church, was renovated in 1919, and is now in urgent need of restoration and care. Due to its importance not only for the building industry, but also for history, the Volchin church was taken care of by the community.

A committee was set up to this end and decided to raise funds for the restoration of the church itself and the neighbouring buildings. The committee also decided to take care of the voluminous parish archive, which dates back to the middle of the 17th century and contains, among other things, the birth certificate of Stanisław August.
