Description of Novgorod

The text describes Novogrudok in the Minsk province, probably founded by Vladimir V. or Yaroslav after the expedition to Lithuania in 1044; it is mentioned as the place where Władysław Jagiełło married Zonka (Sophia). In addition, a brief sketch of the post-Basilian church, formerly the temple of Perkun, is presented (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1872, Series 2, T:9, p. 52, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text.

Description of Novogrudok

According to Ruthenian chroniclers, Novogrudok was one of the oldest towns founded by Vladimir V. or Yaroslav after his expedition to Lithuania in 1044. Having been repeatedly ravaged by Tartars and Teutonic Knights in the 13th and 14th centuries, Novogrudok began to enjoy a long-lasting peace under Vytautas' rule in Lithuania, and as a result quickly recovered. In 1415, a convention of Greek bishops took place here to elect a metropolitan. It was here that Ladislaus Jagiello, in his old age, married, in 1422, his fourth wife, Zofia, daughter of Andrew, Duke of Holshany, and niece of Vytautas. Finally, in 1448 Kozmir IV held a general assembly with the Lithuanian nobility here. Destroyed by the Tatars twice again during the reign of Alexander Jagiellon, Novogrudok was granted Magdeburg Law by Sigismund I at the session of Brest in 1511. Our drawing shows the post-Basilian church, founded around 1632 by Adam Chreptowicz, chamberlain of Novgorod. This church, according to local legend, stands on the site where Perkun's temple stood in pagan times.
