Forests named after Kazimierz Pułaski.

In the vicinity of Chicago, a ceremony was held to name the forests near Patos Hills after Casimir Pulaski, and to erect a memorial plaque in honour of Casimir Pulaski. At the ceremony, Consul General Szczepański, in his speech, emphasised the importance of this beautiful celebration in the Chicago area, where Polish and American life are most closely intertwined.

Representatives of the civil authorities and the United States Army also spoke. At the conclusion, the audience sang the Polish national anthem.

Construction of the Polish Emigration House in Buenos Aires.

Recently arrived in South America, the émigré councillor Mr Michał Pańkiewicz developed a very energetic activity at his new work site. First of all, he initiated the construction of the Polish Emigration House in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. He also began a large-scale propaganda campaign to collect contributions for this useful purpose. The need for such an institution had long been strongly felt among the dispersed and poorly organised Polish emigration in Argentina.

That is why the whole Polish community in Argentina supported the initiative of Councillor M. Pankiewicz. By 1 July this year, a considerable sum of money had been collected; after counting, over 100,000 zlotys. Contributions are still coming in. It is characteristic that Polish Jews in Argentina, hitherto indifferent to Polish affairs, now support the construction of the House of Emigration and have contributed a considerable sum for this purpose.

Exhibition of samples and designs of Polish industry in Harbin.

The Exhibition of Trials and Designs of Polish Industry in Harbin, which has been planned for three years now, will be realised this year. In spite of exceptional technical and other difficulties, the initiators of the exhibition have succeeded, through a joint effort on the part of the local Polish Delegation and the newly-established Association of Polish Merchants and Industrialists in Manchuria, in expediting all the preparatory work, as a result of which the exhibition will be opened on 15 November this year, a day already set for a number of Polish ceremonies and manifestations. As has been pointed out more than once, the share of Polish goods in Manchuria's steadily growing imports is negligible.

One of the reasons for this state of affairs is the lack of an appropriate apparatus to popularise and promote Polish industry and its products in an appropriate manner among local Chinese merchants. Foreign competition is already so well established in Manchuria that it can afford individual or individual-industry advertising rather than collective advertising. Under our conditions, even within a rather modest framework, the exhibition will be a great step forward in making Polish economic expansion to the markets of the Far East more accessible.

According to expert opinion, in order to win the confidence of the Chinese public, it is necessary to convince them of the versatility, high level and development of Polish industry as a whole. For the above-mentioned reasons, the Exhibition Organising Committee, consisting of the most important representatives of the Polish economic sphere in Harbin, believes that it is desirable for the Exhibition to include not only companies prepared to export to China, but also those that do not know the Chinese market and whose products may even temporarily prove uncompetitive.

Only in this way can the Exhibition achieve its intended purpose: to convince the Chinese buyer of the strength, excellence and diversity of Polish industry. Irrespective of the above-mentioned assumptions, the Exhibition management will make every effort to take advantage of the exhibition's propaganda moment and the favourable atmosphere associated with it, in a practical and commercial sense.
