New church in Litvinov

The text, accompanied by an illustration, describes the ceremony of the consecration of the new church in Litvinov, Podhajec district. The consecration was performed by the Lviv ap, Fr. B. Twardowski. In the following part of the text, the course of the ceremony and a short history of the Litviniviv church are deleted, as well as the question of the foundation of the new church by, among others, Helena Lityńska, the current owner of Litvinivov (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1938, no. 103, p. 7, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

The new church in Litvinivov consecrated by Archbishop Dr Boleslaw Twardowski.

Numerous villages, but even from more distant parts of Podolia. Unfortunately, the announced participation of civil and military dignitaries from Ternopil fell through due to official obstacles, while the population, eager to reveal its patriotic feelings, especially after such great diplomatic and military successes in the occupation of Zaolzie, enthusiastically welcomed the presence of officers from the Brzeżan garrison headed by Colonel Fildorf.

In our borderlands, the day of the consecration of the new church takes on a special significance for the Polish population, differing from ordinary celebrations in that it is not just a joyful event, but also the beginning of a new era in the national life of the land. After the religious disadvantage of the Polish population compared to the population of the Eastern rite, which has its own Orthodox church in every village, the consecration of a new church is the beginning of equality for the Polish population, giving them what the Ruthenians have had for a long time, i.e. the possibility of satisfying their religious needs on the spot, without the need to make several-kilometre-long journeys to the parish church.

The fact that all major events in the life of every resident, from cradle to death, are linked to the local church, where they take place, is also an invaluable link for every believer to the church, according to the words engraved on the bells: "To the living I call and to the dead I bid farewell". The celebration in Litviniviv increased the memory of the former splendour of the church that existed in this place several hundred years ago, which had its origins in the beginnings of the history of the Halychyna region, as the Litvinivivov parish was founded under the Lviv archbishop Blessed Jakub Strepa. In the fifteenth century, this church received a splendid endowment from the then powerful Buchak family, and in 1470 this endowment was increased by a donation from the Skarbeks, owners of neighbouring Saranské, who transferred the entire endowment of this village to the Litvinov church.

This church was also a parish church, the Litvinov parish originally bordered on the Brzeżany parish, and only after the foundation of Brzeżany in 1530 did the Litvinov parish become a neighbour of Brzeżany. In the following century, probably in 1624, the Litviniviv church was burnt down during the Turkish-Tartar raids, the Tatar savages also destroyed the whole town of Litviniv including the castle, and from that time on, both the church and the local parish were never heard of again, so the settlement lost its former importance and splendour. Litvinivtsy was deprived of its church for several hundred years, and its Polish population was assigned to a parish several kilometres away and, as a result, slowly but inevitably dwindled.

It was not until the present-day owner of Litvinov, Mrs Helena Lityńska, became involved in the construction of a new church with a zeal unusual in modern times, donating the land, bearing a significant part of the costs and the whole effort of the construction, which, thanks to the joint efforts of the local poor population and the efforts of the authorities as well as the contributions collected, has reached the present stage, enabling the temple to be consecrated. That is why the Archbishop, in his sermon during the consecration, rightly emphasised the merits of the foundress and encouraged the Polish population in the borderlands to continue their perseverance in completing the internal beautification of the temple.
