Cemetery in Szydłów

The cemetery at Šiluva is not just a burial place, but part of a Marian shrine. Before 1651, a small wooden shrine was built at the site of the apparitions , around the stone where Mary appeared to the Little Shepherds. Around it, close to the holy place, the faithful began to be buried.

The cemetery at Šiluva lies on the axis of the Church of Our Lady's sanctuary, less than 500 metres to the east. Its terrain is slightly undulating and was once outside the settlement's boundaries, but is now surrounded by residential buildings.

Burials in the area date back to the first half of the 17th century. , the time of the apparitions and early expressions of devotion to Mary at Šiluva. A formal necropolis was established with the erection of a wooden church , consecrated in 1651. It enclosed the stone on which the Blessed Virgin Mary had appeared, stating that there was no church in the village. This first, probably small cemetery, was considerably enlarged at the end of the 18th century (eventually the old part occupies about 2.50 ha). This happened when a new church was erected (1760-1786) , directly in the town, closer to the market square. The first church then became both a chapel of revelation and a cemetery chapel.

Huge changes in the layout of the cemetery took place in the years 1912-1924 , when a monumental chapel designed by the prominent Vilnius architect Antoni Wiwulski (1877-1919), educated in Vienna and Paris, was erected in the place of the wooden church . It is one of the few surviving works by this remarkable architect, whose work includes the Grunwald Monument in Krakow and the Three Crosses Monument in Vilnius. Although he received a classical, academic education, he sought new solutions in architecture and sculpture, advocating the then modern style - modernism. Wiwulski's chapel, like the earlier ones, combines the function of a cemetery chapel and a sanctuary chapel, protecting the place of revelation. The shape of the building is original, as it is essentially a tower - an obelisk reaching 44 metres in height, rising from a square whose side measures about 10 metres. It is visible from a great distance, especially as it was built on the highest point of the cemetery. The building's façade features an arcaded portico, concealing a portal, and above it a monumental cross against which is placed a relief of the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus. The other facades feature ogival windows with stained glass. The interior of the chapel features an apparition stone and a marble statue of the Virgin Mary, which was brought from London by the Šiluva parish priest Tadeusz Josef Bukaty (1740-1795), who was also suffragan of Samogitia.

On the southern side of the chapel, a low chapel-catacomb was built into the steep cemetery slope in the 1830s and later modernised, following the shape of the hill. Its façade was faced with fieldstone. The building was divided into sections belonging to different families (including the Stravinskis), with individual catacombs covered with epitaph plaques in between. The entrances to the family chapels are captured by neo-Gothic portals. The epitaph plates, however, have inscriptions in Polish and Lithuanian. One of them bears the inscription: "TO THE SHADOWS / OF JERY AND TERESSA KON / TRYMOW RODZ(IC)OW GABRY = / ELA AND URSZULA KONTRY= / MOWNY DZIECI ZMAR(ŁYCH) ŻA= / ŁOSNI ANNA Z KONTRY= / MOW KUSZEIEWSKA K:W:P: / WIDOW, TOGETHER WITH HER BROTHER / LEON KONTRY OBOZ=/ (NY)M DEDICATE THIS MONUMENT / FOR THE AROUSING OF PIOUS / SIGHS OF THE PASSER-BY / R. 1833 AUG: 12 DAY". Another commemorates Rev. Kasperowicz: "Ś. P. / PRIEST KAPSER / KASPEROWICZ / DIED 1876 R. M. / DECEM(BRA) 20 D. MA / CY AGE 77 YEARS / PASSERBY ZMU / WCI [!] PACIERZ".

In the old part of the necropolis (until 1939, the new part occupies the promontory adjacent to it on the south-eastern side), which has a square shape, tombstones from the early 19th century and later can be found . Many of them commemorate local landowners: Billewicz, Butkiewicz, Dowkont, Klimont, Kontrym, Korew, Strumiłłów, Wierzbicki and Zaleski, as well as the Piłsudskis. The sepulchral monuments provide an overview of the most important sepulchral forms of the 19th - 20th centuries. The oldest and most valuable, as they are classicist, represent the chapel type. These are vertical structures made of brick, plastered and covered with a tile roof. A significant number are also cast-iron crosses on either concrete or stone plinths. There are also some stelae made of granite.
