The note presents the rules and regulations of the competition announced on 20 May 1926 for the design of a monument to Juliusz Słowacki in Lviv. A modernised reading of the text

A competition was announced for the design of a monument to Juliusz Słowacki in Lviv, under the following conditions:
1. only Polish artists, regardless of nationality, may participate in the competition.

2) The monument is to be erected in Lviv in the middle of the square in front of the City Theatre. A site plan and photographs of the surroundings will be given to each participating artist upon request. (Address: Dr. Viktor Hahn, Lviv, Dvernitskyi 9).

(3) The monument should be of a monumental nature, but the cost should not exceed the sum of 100,000 zloty. The P.P. artists are left entirely free in their approach to the subject and choice of material.
(4) The inscription on the monument is to read: "To Juliusz Słowacki - The Nation".
5) The project of the monument is to be submitted in a plaster model on a scale of 1:10. Other than that, the artists are left free to develop projections, perspectives, descriptions, cost estimates, etc.
6) The costs of postage to Lviv shall be borne by the Committee, and from Lviv by the author.
(7) The deadline for the submission of entries is August 30th, this year at 3 p.m. The address for submitting or sending competition entries: "Lviv, Committee for the Construction of the Monument to Juliusz Słowacki, Museum of Artistic Industry, Hetmanska Street". Overseas entries must be posted to the post office or railway station by the same deadline with the date of posting clearly marked.
(8) Each entry must bear an emblem without the author's name. Each entry must be accompanied by an envelope with the same emblem, containing inside the author's name and exact address.
(9) 3 prizes will be awarded and unconditionally paid: 1) PLN 3,000, 2) PLN 1,500, 3) PLN 1,000. The awarded works become the property of the Committee.
(10) The Committee reserves the right to select from among the prize-winning designs one to be executed in kind, with the author being appointed to execute the detailed models for separate remuneration. The Committee may, however, announce a tighter competition involving the authors of the prize-winning works or specially invited artists. Should this second competition also fail to produce a satisfactory result, the Committee reserves the right to entrust the design of the monument to an artist of its choice.
The decision of the Competition Jury will be final and irrevocable no later than 15 October 1926. The opening of the envelopes containing the names of the authors will take place immediately after the prizes have been awarded.
(12) The designs submitted to the Competition will be on public display in Lviv after the Competition Jury's verdict is announced. The Committee has the right to reproduce the awarded projects in art magazines and publications.
(13) Unawarded projects will be returned by the Committee to the bearers of entry receipts within 3 months after the closure of the exhibition. After this date, uncollected entries will become the property of the Committee and the relevant envelopes unsealed will be burnt.
(14) The conditions and results of the competition will be announced in daily and art magazines.
(15) The resolutions of the Competition Jury will be valid with six members of the Competition Jury present.
16. the Competition Jury shall consist of: 1) the President of the City of Lviv, 2) the President of the Committee, 3) the Vice President of the Committee, 4) the Delegate of the Committee, 5) two Delegates of the Union of Artists in Lviv, 6) a Representative of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, 7) a Representative of the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, 8) a Representative of the Architectural Department of the Lviv Polytechnic University, 9) a Representative of the Department of Culture and Art.

With the above message sent to us, the editors of 'Sztuka Piękne' express their surprise that the competition for such a serious monument as that of J. Słowacki is to be held at such an incredibly accelerated pace (the competition was announced on 20 May and the deadline for the submission of entries is 30 August). A three-month deadline, especially during the summer holiday period, is completely unjustifiable, and will certainly be lethal for the outcome of the competition. Therefore, if the Committee is serious about its task - which we naturally do not doubt - it should extend the deadline for submissions straight away to at least the end of 1926.
