Remembrance of the unveiling of the plaque at the Villa Pilsudski in Madeira

The text mentions the Quinta Bettencourt villa, on which a plaque commemorating Marshal Piłsudski, who once lived there, was unveiled. The text also describes memories associated with Piłsudski, and includes a photograph from the occasion of the plaque's unveiling in 1934 (Source: Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny, Krakow 1936, no. 80, pp. 2-3, after: Małopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

A modernised reading of the text.

Through narrow, winding streets, studded with small stones that I would call "cat's heads" (as opposed to Polish "cat's heads"), among low, mostly storied houses, we slipped - so slippery are these "cat's heads" - up the hill. In between the old walls, flower-coloured and overgrown with colour, the chauffeur stopped. A large brass plaque was nailed on the gate: QUINTA BETTENCOURT. We walked under a garland of Bouguinviles flowers up some wide, slippery steps made of small stones to the porch. Mrs Anne Kreslein de Fretters Martius, who today rents the villa from its owner, Mr Braze, greeted us warmly, proudly displaying a caricature of the Marshal cut from some magazine in her family album. We stood on the porch. In front of us low and far was the ocean blue, silver, behind us the mountains, green, brown. We stood in silence among three large trees and four maples - witnesses to the Marshal's musings.
The house that Marshal occupied is remarkably simple. Modest on the outside, and simple on the inside.
